“My election as NFCSF president brings greater responsibilities. I will do my best keeping in mind the stated objective for which the federation was constituted. The welfare of the sugar sector with farmers’ interests will be an integral aspect. I will try to do justice to the post,” Patil said.
Ahead of the 2019 Assembly elections, Patil had quit the Congress to join the BJP. He was BJPs candidate from Indapur Assembly seat in Pune district in Western Maharashtra. However, he lost to a then undivided NCP’s Dattatrey Bharne.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Patil was given to understand that he would be considered as the Congress-NCP candidate from Indapur assembly election. As a result, he wholeheartedly worked in his constituency. Indapur is one of the six Assembly segments that come under Baramati Lok Sabha seat. Harshvardhan Patil had worked for NCP’s Supriya Sule who was contesting from Baramati in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. Six months later, the NCP did not agree to Patil’s candidature to the Indapur assembly seat. Instead, they supported Dattatrey Bharne’s candidature, who was a close associate of Ajit Pawar. Patil felt let down by NCP and joined the BJP.
After losing the 2019 assembly polls, Patil has had no important post in the BJP. Although he has been pro-active in the sugar sector, leading the delegation at the Centre, he always wanted a position of prominence.

A BJP functionary said, “Harshvardhan Patil was seriously considered for Rajya Sabha. But then with just three seats they had to accommodate Ashok Chavan, Medha Kulkarni and Ajit Gopchade.”

“My supporters were hurt as I had lost last election by a mere margin of 1,500 votes. After my loss, my supporters suffered as lot of injustice was meted out to them. My supporters had to struggle but they never deserted me. The common man stood by me despite the fact that I was not an MLA,” Patil said.
“I told Devendra Fadnavis that if I take the decision he wants me to take, then it will be a personal decision. But I told him that I want to take decision as per the people’s wish. To this, Fadnavis said I should understand his problems and take decision which I think fit. After this, I decided to meet Sharad Pawar,” said Harshvardhan, who is considered close to Fadnavis.
Harshvarshan was unlikely to to be fielded from Indapur seat by the BJP .
As MUMBAI: While former minister and BJP leader Harshavardhan Patil is said to be eyeing a nomination to the Indapur assembly seat from the Sharad Pawar-led NCP, local leaders from Pawar’s party have opposed any such induction. Leaders from Indapur tehsil in Pune district met Pawar and insisted that local workers be given the opportunity instead of “leaders who changed sides for political gains ahead of the elections”. They said that if Patil was interested in getting a ticket from the party, he should first work for the party for at least five years. Pawar on Sunday hinted at a nomination for a candidate with elective merit. Pravin Mane, chairman of Sonai Dairy, a popular milk brand in western Maharashtra, and party worker and former district council member Appasaheb Jagdale met him at his residence in Baramati and staked a claim to the seat. The two reportedly said that they had played a crucial role in the victory of Supriya Sule in a very tough fight in the Lok Sabha election. The Indapur assembly segment is part of the Baramati Lok Sabha constituency. According to NCP (SP) leaders, Pawar is still in two minds over the induction of Patil, a four-term MLA from the constituency. Sule, however, is in favour of his induction as she believes that only he has the capacity to fight Dattatray Bharne, the incumbent MLA who defeated Patil twice in 2014 and 2019. “Bharne, a Dhangar leader, is very popular, as he has brought a budget of ₹1,300 crore and ₹5,000 crore to the constituency in his two terms,” said an NCP leader. “The constituency is dominated by Dhangar community voters. Against this backdrop, Sule believes that Patil, a Maratha and former minister and a known name in the cooperative sector, can defeat the sitting MLA.” Patil, a Congress MLA between 2009 and 2014, joined the BJP in September 2019 and unsuccessfully fought the assembly polls against Bharne. Will join NCP (SP) with supporters, says BJP leader Harshvardhan Patil
Following the meeting, he claimed Pawar had urged him to join his party and contest the assembly elections.
The assembly elections in Maharashtra are likely to be held next month.
Patil, who has been elected as MLA four times from Indapur seat, is aspiring to contest from Indapur again. The seat is represented by the BJP's alliance partner, NCP, which is likely to field sitting MLA Dattatray Bharne again this time.
Talking to reporters on Friday, Patil said, "I had a meeting with Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis over my political stand. We had a detailed discussion for over two and a half hours. Since the Indapur seat is going to the sitting MLA from Mahayuti (Dattatraya Bharne of NCP), he (Fadnavis) assured me of another option. Though the option would have been feasible for me, it would not have been acceptable to my supporters and people from my constituency."
The BJPleader said he held a meeting with his supporters and decided to join the NCP (SP) with them.
Patil served as minister of state for agriculture and marketing in the Shiv Sena-BJP alliance government during 1995-99. He won the 1995 assembly election as an independent candidate.
He was a minister during the Congress-NCP alliance government from 1999 to 2014. He joined the Congress in 2009 and was the minister of cooperation and parliamentary affairs.
