MTV Roadies is an Indian reality television series. It was launched on 15 August 2003 and airs on MTV India. The show is digitally available on JioCinema.

In this show, a group of contestants travel to different destinations and participate in various tasks that challenge their physical, social and mental strength.

Overview

History

The Roadies format was created by Nikhil J Alva, founder of Miditech Studios. Miditech Studios produced the first 2 seasons of the Roadies series. In those early days, the format creator, Nikhil J Alva, had conceptualized the format as one that would unite the youth of India through social work and random acts of kindness as the contestants travelled across India.

Seeing its popularity soar, the series was taken over by MTV from Miditech, to be produced in-house after the second season. Raghu Ram and Rajiv Ram, former Miditech Studio employees, were tasked with producing and anchoring the show for MTV. Under Raghu and Rajiv's guidance, the show took a dramatic turn away from its feel-good-social-flavor, to a more crass, and in-your-face tone. Raghu and Rajiv left the show in 2014. They told the media that they had done enough to popularise the show and wanted to give opportunities to the new generation to carry the show forward. With a 17-year history, it is one of India's longest running reality shows.

Raghu Ram on quitting Roadies; claims he was forced to sign ‘bonded labour’ contract

Raghu Ramis a name, that has been synonymous to the youth-based reality show Roadies, ever since its inception. While many youngsters participated in the show back then to get a ‘dose’ from Raghu Ram, his decision to quit Roadies had shocked many.
Was it his decision to quit or what drove him to quit? While initially Raghu had mentioned having no hard feelings between the channel and him, in his autobiography, he has mentioned in detail about what happened in detail.
In 2013, Raghu had released his autobiography, Rearview: My Roadies Journey, Raghu mentioned about a channel executive named Ashish, who refused to allow him to work for a different channel. Raghu mentioned that he was only paid as an employee of the channel and not for his appearance in the show.

    A 'bonded labour' contract

Things turned sour when Ashish gave Raghu a new contract, which he described was more of a ‘bonded labour’. Recalling his meeting with Ashish, “I told him I never got paid for appearing on Roadies, anyway (I was only paid as an employee of the channel), and that I had equity outside that I wanted to monetize. It was not in the same space as Roadies, so there was no conflict of interest here. Furthermore, we were only going to shoot on weekends when channel was shut, so I would not be taking any time away from my work. I could see no problem with this arrangement. Ashish heard me out, then said, ‘No, bro, this doesn’t work for the channel.’ I was very hurt, but all I said was, ‘Well, bro, in that case, the channel doesn’t work for me.’”

    His decision to quit

Raghu had submitted his resignation, which wasn’t accepted and he was presented with a new contract in 2009 that said he won’t be able to work outside and won’t be able to quit the channel. After much reluctance, he did accept it and realised he was getting sidelined. It was then he finally chose to quit and was even threatened to b
