Anora leads Independent Spirit Award with 3 wins including Best Feature

Heading towards next month’s Academy Awards, Sean Baker’s Anora has been on a complete rebound, taking over awards season via the WGA, DGAand PGA. Now, it has added the Independent Spirit Awards to that list, taking home three at yesterday’s ceremony: Best Feature, Best Director for Bakerand Best Lead Performance for Mikey Madison. Going in, it co-led the nominees with five, tying with I Saw the TV Glow.

‘Anora’ Takes Top Honors at the Independent Spirit Awards

The Independent Spirit Awards recognized Anora with three major wins, including Best Feature, Best Director for Sean Baker, and Best Lead Performance for Mikey Madison. The film, which follows a Brooklyn sex worker’s whirlwind relationship with the son of a Russian oligarch, has drawn increasing attention this awards season.

Jesse Eisenbergwon Best Screenplay for A Real Pain, while Kieran Culkinwas awarded Best Supporting Performance for the same film. Other major winners included No Other Landin the documentary category and Flow for Best International Film.

The event, held in a tent near the beach in Santa Monica, brought attention to the challenges facing independent filmmakers. In his acceptance speech, Bakerspoke about the financial difficulties of making films outside the studio system, urging the industry to improve conditions for independent directors.
