  • At this point, I think
  • It’s been so long since I’ve written a blog post about figure skating that I really have no idea what I’m doing.

It’s been three weeks since the pairs event at the 2021 World Championships, and I’ve finally decided to unpack my thoughts about it. It was a wild event, full of great performances and surprising disappointments. Rising stars Mishina/Galliamov edged out defending champions Sui/Han for the world title while Boikova/Kozlovskii slipped to third. The United States and Canada maintained their hold on two spots for pairs at the Olympics next year, and a few pairs from small skating federations delivered strong, enjoyable performances to put themselves on the world map.

I’m also going to discuss the state of the field heading into the Olympic season. With the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic looming overhead, it’s difficult to foresee what will happen, but I’m going to make some bold predictions.

    Anastasia Mishina/Aleksandr Galliamov:

Since moving to Tamara Moskvina’s coaching group last year, Mishina/Galliamov have transformed from promising stars to top contenders. They’ve always had stunning technical elements, but Moskvina gave their packaging a much-needed boost. Their skating skills and choreography have improved so much in the past year. They started off strong with a clean short program, putting themselves in third place going into the free skate. Every time I watch them, I’m amazed by the sheer quality of their elements. Their throws are huge and their side-by-side jumps are very impressive. The short program itself is good; it’s cheerful and a bit quirky, but it isn’t excessively campy, and it doesn’t overshadow their technical strength.

In the free skate, Mishina/Galliamov came out in full force. The whole performance was fierce, exhilarating, and victorious. Queen really isn’t my thing, and I’m not a big fan of the music cuts, but they sold the heck out of it, and I actually had fun watching them. I particularly like how Galliamov shines
