Sharif family

Pakistani political family

The Sharif family is a Pakistani political family of Punjabi–Kashmiri background. Playing a prominent role in Pakistani politics, especially in Punjab, since late-1980s, the family held the leadership of the Islamic Democratic Alliance; and has held the leadership of the Pakistan Muslim League-N for most of the party's existence. Originating in East Punjab and the Kashmir Valley, the family has been settled in Lahore, the capital of Punjab, since the partition of India.

Muhammad Sharif, the father of former Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif, migrated from Jati Umra, Amritsar District (now in Tarn Taran district, India, after the creation of Pakistan in 1947). He was a businessman who founded the Ittefaq Group and Sharif Group in 1939. Sharif's other son Shehbaz Sharif currently serving as Prime Minister of Pakistan from 2024.

Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif (Urdu, Punjabi: میاں محمد نواز شریف; born 25 December 1949) is a Pakistani businessman and politician who served as the Prime Minister of Pakistan for three non-consecutive terms. He is the longest-serving prime minister of Pakistan, having served a total of more than 9 years across three tenures. Each term has ended in his ousting.

He is the elder brother of Shehbaz Sharif, who also served as prime minister of Pakistan from 2022 to 2023 and from 2024 to present.

In 2017, Nawaz was removed from office by the Supreme Court of Pakistan regarding revelations from the Panama Papers case. In 2018, the Pakistani Supreme Court disqualified Nawaz from holding public office, and he was also sentenced to ten years in prison by an accountability court. Since 2019, Nawaz was in London for medical treatment on bail. He was also declared an absconder by a Pakistani court, however, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) granted him protective bail till October 24 in the Avenfield and Al-Aziza cases. In 2023, after four years of exile, he returned to Pakistan.

Nawaz was born in Lahore, Punjab, on 25 December 1949. The Sharif family are Kashmiris of Punjab. His father, Muhammad Sharif, was an upper-middle-class businessman and industrialist whose family had emigrated from Anantnag in Kashmir for business. They settled in the village of Jati Umra in Amritsar district, Punjab, at the beginning of the twentieth century. His mother's family came from Pulwama. After the creation of Pakistan in 1947, Nawaz's parents migrated from Amritsar to Lahore. His father followed the teachings of the Ahl-i Hadith. His family owns Ittefaq Group, a multimillion-dollar steel conglomerate, and Sharif Group, a conglomerate with holdings in agriculture, transport and sugar mills.     Amna Nawaz (Urdu: آمنہ نواز) is an American broadcast journalist and a co-anchor of the PBS NewsHour alongside Geoff Bennett. Before joining PBS in April 2018, Nawaz was an anchor and correspondent at ABC News and NBC News. She has received a number of awards, including an Emmy Award and a Society for Features Journalism award.

    Early life and career

    Nawaz was born in Virginia on September 18, 1979, to Pakistani parents. Her father, Shuja Nawaz (brother of former Pakistani Army chief Asif Nawaz Janjua), had been a journalist in Pakistan. She attended Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Fairfax County, Virginia. In 2001, she earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Pennsylvania in politics, philosophy, and economics, where she co-captained the women's varsity field hockey team. She holds a master's degree in comparative politics from the London School of Economics.

    Nawaz's career plan was to become a lawyer but after a fellowship at ABC News, she shifted to journalism. She initially worked for Nightline.

    Journalism

    Nawaz joined NBC in 2003, later joining Dateline NBC, where she worked on documentaries. At NBC's investigative unit, she was a producer of Mortgage Crisis Investigations, which was nominated for the 2008 Emmy Awards for Business & Financial Reporting.

    Nawaz received an International Reporting Project fellowship in 2009. In 2010, she shared a News & Documentary Emmy Award for the NBC News special Inside the Obama White House. Later she was correspondent and bureau chief at NBC's Islamabad bureau.
