In this part are also inserted a few out of the many miracles which the Lord our God deigned to work by him, while he was living in the flesh.

    The second part relates the events from the last year but one of his life until his happy death. The third contains many, and omits more, of the miracles which the glorious Saint, reigning with Christ in the heavens is working on earth. It also recounts the reverence, honor, praise and glory which the happy Pope Gregory, and with him all the Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church, most devoutly paid to him by enrolling him in the number of the Saints. Thanks be to Almighty God, Who ever in His Saints shows himself worthy of admiration and love!

    Just as I was about to write the life of one of your companions, Francis Besucco died unexpectedly and I decided that his life was the one to write. I feel that as well as pleasing both yourselves and those from his district back at home, my effort will be useful to you; hence I have researched Francis’ life and written it up in an orderly fashion in this small booklet.

    Some of you might question whether what I have written really happened and what were my sources.

    Briefly this is how I went about it. For the years that Francis spent at home, I collected information from the parish priest, the school teacher, his parents and his friends. You could almost say that I have simply rewritten and rearranged what they sent me. For the time he spent with us it was simply a matter of collecting the information from many witnesses; these testimonies were written and signed by the witnesses themselves.

    It is true that some of the facts recorded will appear far-fetched, and that is one reason why I have been very careful in writing them down. If the facts were unimportant there would be no need to publish them.     Henry Francis Lyte (1 June 1793 – 20 November 1847) was a Scottish Anglican divine, hymnodist and poet.

    Biography

    Youth and education

    Henry Francis Lyte was the second son of Thomas and Anna Maria (née Oliver) Lyte, whose family came originally from Lytes Cary Manor. He was born at Ednam, near Kelso, Scotland. The Lyte family originated from Somerset in South West England and was one of considerable prominence as early as the reign of Edward I. Its seat was at Lytes Cary Manor, but the house passed out of the family in 1748.

    Thomas Lyte, an army captain, does not seem to have formally married Anna Maria Oliver, although it has been argued that since they were accepted as husband and wife in Scotland where they lived, they were legally married according to Scottish law. Lyte's father was described as a "ne-er do-well ... more interested in fishing and shooting than in facing up to his family responsibilities". He deserted the family shortly after making arrangements for his two oldest sons to attend Portora Royal School in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, in Ulster; and Anna moved to London, where both she and her youngest son died.

    The headmaster at Portora, Robert Burrowes, recognised Lyte's ability, paid the boy's fees and "welcomed him into his own family during the holidays". Lyte was effectively an adopted son.

    After studying at Trinity College, Dublin, and with very limited training for ordained ministry, Lyte took Anglican holy orders in 1815 and for some time he held a curacy in Taghmon near Wexford.
