Education

Turai Yar'Adua was born in the Katsina metropolitan area of northern Nigeria in July She attended Garama Primary School in Katsina as a child and proceeded to the Government Girls Secondary School, Kankiya, also in Katsina state.

Turai Yar'Adua also attended Katsina College of Arts, Science and Technology in Zaria, Kaduna state, where she was reportedly named "best student" in In , Turai Yar'Adua received a bachelor's degree in language from Ahmadu Bello University.

Personal life

Turai married Umaru Yar'Adua in and they have five daughters and two sons. Her two sons are Shehu Umaru Musa Yar'adua and Musa Umaru Musa Yar'adua. Shehu is the name of Umaru Yar'adua's elder brother and former de facto vice president of Nigeria, Shehu Musa Yar'Adua. One of their daughters, Zainab, is married to Usman Saidu Nasamu Dakingari, a former governor of Kebbi state.

In September , Turai was the guest of honour at the commissioning of the Mobility Aid and Braille Centre in Akure, Ondo State. The centre was built by the Handicapped Education Foundation (HANDEF), a non-governmental organization founded by Olufunke Agagu, then First Lady of Ondo State. Also, in attendance at the event were the Vice President's wife, Patience Jonathan, and the wives of other state governors.

He had previously served as the governor of Katsina State from to ; and was a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In , Yar'Adua left for Saudi Arabia to receive treatment for pericarditis. He returned to Nigeria on 24 February , but died on 5 May.

Early life

Family

Yar'adua was born in Katsina State, Nigeria. His father, Musa Yar'Adua, was a Minister for Lagos in the First Republic and held the chieftaincy title of Matawalle (custodian of the royal treasury) of the Katsina Emirate, a title which the younger Yar'Adua inherited. His paternal grandfather, Malam Umaru, had also held the title of Matawallen Katsina, while his paternal grandmother, Binta, was a princess of the Katsina Emirate and a sister of emir Muhammadu Dikko.

Yar'Adua married Turai Yar'Adua of Katsina state in ; they had seven children (five daughters and two sons) and several grandchildren. Their daughter, Zainab, is married to the former Kebbi state governor, Usman Dakingari.

Another daughter, Nafisa, is married to Isa Yuguda, a former governor of Bauchi state. Her sister Maryam is married to Ibrahim Shema, Yar'Adua's successor as Katsina state governor.

Yar'Adua was also married to Hauwa Umar Radda from to , and they had two children.

Yar'Adua started his education at Rafukka Primary School in , and moved to Dutsinma Boarding Primary School in He attended the Government College at Keffi from until In he received a Higher School Certificate from Barewa College.^[18
