A P J Abdul Kalam

A scientist—philosopher came to be known as a protagonist of societal transformation through scientific development and innovation. Before taking over as the eleventh President of India in 2002, Dr. Kalam worked at ISRO and DRDO and as Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India. In 1995, Dr. Kalam articulated the vision of India becoming a developed country by 2020. As a visiting Professor to several Universities, Dr. Kalam evinced interest in visiting schools and interacting with young children. He continued this during his Presidency and has met 1 million children so far. Children in m turn responded enthusiastically and sent thousands of letters and e-mails. Recipient of India's highest civilian award Bharat Ratna, in 1997, Dr. Kalam was recognised as the face of 21st century India. He is also awarded the prestigious King Charles II medal for his contribution for promotion of science. He is author of 9 books. Most of his books have been bestsellers for past many years.

डॉ. ए.पी.जे. अब्दुल कलाम भारत के यशस्वी वैज्ञानिकों में से एक तथा उपग्रह प्रक्षेपण यान और रणनीतिक मिसाइलों के स्वदेशी विकास के वास्तुकार हैं। एस.एल.वी.-3, ‘अग्नि’ और ‘पृथ्वी’ उनकी नेतृत्व क्षमता के प्रमाण हैं। उनके अथक प्रयासों से भारत रक्षा तथा वायु आकाश प्रणालियों में आत्मनिर्भर बना।
अन्ना विश्‍वविद्यालय में प्रौद्योगिकी तथा सामाजिक रूपांतरण के प्रोफेसर के रूप में उन्होंने विद्यार्थियों से विचारों का आदान-प्रदान किया और उन्हें एक विकसित भारत का स्वप्न दिया। अनेक पुरस्कार-सम्मानों के साथ उन्हें देश के सबसे बड़े नागरिक सम्मान ‘भारत रत्‍न’ से भी सम्मानित किया गया।

President of India from 2002 to 2007

Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam (; 15 October 1931 – 27 July 2015) was an Indian aerospace scientist and statesman who served as the president of India from 2002 to 2007.

Born and raised in a Muslim family in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, he studied physics and aerospace engineering. He spent the next four decades as a scientist and science administrator, mainly at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and was intimately involved in India's civilian space programme and military missile development efforts. He was known as the "Missile Man of India" for his work on the development of ballistic missile and launch vehicle technology. He also played a pivotal organisational, technical, and political role in India's Pokhran-II nuclear tests in 1998, the second test since the first nuclear test by India in 1974.

Kalam was elected as the president of India in 2002 with the support of both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the then-opposition Indian National Congress. He was widely referred to as the "People's President". He engaged in teaching, writing and public service after his presidency. He was a recipient of several awards, including the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour.

While delivering a lecture at IIM Shillong, Kalam collapsed and died from an apparent cardiac arrest on 27 July 2015, aged 83. Thousands attended the funeral ceremony held in his hometown of Rameswaram, where he was buried with full state honours. A memorial was inaugurated near his home town in 2017.
