Second Chance (Shinedown song)
2008 single by Shinedown
"Second Chance" is a song by American rock band Shinedown and the second single from their 2008 album, The Sound of Madness. It was released on September 9, 2008, and has become Shinedown's highest-charting single. To date, "Second Chance" is the second-to-last hard rock song to make the top 10 of the US Billboard Hot 100.
Background
The song has been used in promotion for the second season of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and the 2008 WWE Tribute to the Troops show. In May 2009, "Second Chance" was used in a promo regarding the return of character Michael Corinthos on ABC's daytime drama General Hospital. It was released on DLC as part of a 3-song pack on Guitar Hero 5, as DLC for Rock Band 3 and Rocksmith.
"Second Chance", along with Taylor Swift's "Love Story", was one of two number one songs played by Casey Kasem on the last weekend of his radio career. "Second Chance" was the final number one on Kasem's American Top 20, his hot adult contemporary countdown show that aired its finale on July 4/5, 2009. ("Love Story" held that distinction on its sister program, the adult contemporaryAmerican Top 10.)
Three versions of the song exist – a rock version, which is the album version, a pop version (notably played on Sirius XM Satellite Radio's Adult Top 40-formatted The Pulsesatellite radio channel), which is a remix, although the harder guitars start in the second verse in the song rather than at the second half of the first verse, and an acoustic version, which is very similar to the original, with the exception of the absence of the electric guitar and vocal layering in the original.

Acoustic Sessions is a duo of EPs by Brent Smith and Zach Myers of American rock band Shinedown, released on iTunes on January 28 and March 18, 2014. Videos of the recording sessions, directed by Darren Doane, were released on YouTube in the weeks prior to each album's release.
Production
Frontman Brent Smith and guitarist Zach Myers asked fans to request songs on their Facebook page to be narrowed down to their top ten cover choices. Smith said of the album, "This is for the fans. They picked the songs and we recorded them. It’s as simple as that. And I must say that our audience has great taste."
The ten songs voted highest by the fans were planned to be released over ten days, along with YouTube videos of the recordings, directed by Darren Doane. However, some of the artists being covered (Adele, Phil Collins, Pearl Jam, and Bon Jovi) did not sign off in time for the video release. The extended play was reduced to six songs. The following recording videos were released on YouTube between January 22 and January 28:
- "London Calling" (The Clash), January 22, 2014
- "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" (Otis Redding), January 23, 2014
- '"Black" (Pearl Jam), January 24, 2014
- "Nothing Else Matters" (Metallica), January 25, 2014
- "Blue on Black" (Kenny Wayne Shepherd), January 26, 2014
- "Runaway Train" (Soul Asylum), January 27, 2014
- "She Talks to Angels" (Black Crowes), January 28, 2014
Smith insisted on eventually releasing all of the videos on YouTube, saying, "It's not about money for us. We didn't write these songs. We did this for the audience and for the fans, and we know

2010 single by Shinedown
"The Crow & the Butterfly" is the fifth single by American rock band Shinedown from their 2008 album The Sound of Madness. The song was written by Shinedown lead singer Brent Smith. The song was introduced in 2007, in an acoustic session on The Buckethead Show.
The Crow & the Butterfly – EP was released on iTunes on July 27, 2010, which included the original song, "The Crow & the Butterfly (pull mix)", the music video for the song, and a digital booklet.
Song meaning
Brent Smith explained on a radio interview program, Rockline, that while the band was writing the new album, he had a dream about a mother whose daughter died a month before her son Trevor was born. He wrote the song about the mother dealing with the death of her child and trying to move on.
On a blog on the Shinedown website, Brent Smith said this about the song: "For me lyrically this was one of the most intense stories I have ever written. But I know the song means something different to everyone."
Music video
Smith said this about a possible "The Crow & the Butterfly" video:
"We are in the process of reading through video treatments for the song, and I have to admit we have been so busy with the current tour we are on, and putting everything together for "The Carnival of Madness," we haven't even gotten a chance to ask all of you what you think about the song, and also what kind of video you would like to see from us."
The music video for "The Crow & the Butterfly" was directed by Hannah Lux Davis. It was shot on June 24, 2010, which happens to be the second anniversary of The Sound of Madness. A photo was published of the set, which appeared to be a large room in a mansion. On July 17, 2010, the music video premiered on Yahoo Music. The video begins with the band playing on a stage while a group of mysterious people wearing their bl

Brent Stephen Smith (born January 10, 1978) is an American singer and songwriter best known as the lead vocalist and one of the main songwriters of the rock band Shinedown.
Early life
Smith was born in Knoxville, Tennessee and is an only child.
Career
Prior to fronting the rock band Shinedown, Smith had a high school band named Blind Thought and later was the lead singer in a band called Dreve, which Atlantic Records had signed. Atlantic Records forced Brent to either find another band or lose his record deal. He then went to Los Angeles, California to record with well-known producer Desmond Child. Shortly after returning home to Knoxville, Tennessee, Atlantic dropped the band but retained Smith. He put together Shinedown shortly after. He was soon given a developmental contract by Atlantic Records. Smith moved to Jacksonville, Florida, and began working on the project in 2001.
The first member he recruited was bassist Brad Stewart through local Jacksonville music producer Pete Thornton. Smith and Stewart began recording demos together in a small local studio, whose owner recommended they meet with her fiancé, guitarist Jasin Todd, who Smith brought in as the third member. The original lineup was rounded out by drummer Barry Kerch, who was the seventh drummer the band had auditioned for the spot. The four worked together on creating demos, and submitted their work-in-progress material to Atlantic, who approved of the material and green-lighted a full-length album. The band's debut album, Leave a Whisper was released May 27, 2003. The album was eventually certified platinum by the RIAA in the United States, indicating sale
