Monique Lhuillier

Monique Lhuillier is a Filipino-American fashion designer and creative director known for her bridal, ready-to-wear and lifestyle brand. Internationally recognized as one of America’s foremost designers, she launched her eponymous brand in 1996 and has since established fashion houses in Los Angeles, California, where she primarily works and lives, as well as in Manhattan's Upper East Side.
Lhuillier was born to Michel J. Lhuillier, a French-born Filipino businessman and Amparito Llamas, a Filipina society figure and former model. She grew up in Cebu City and studied at Saint Theresa's College, continuing on to the Chateau Mont-Choisi finishing school in Lausanne, Switzerland.
After meeting her husband Tom Bugbee, Lhuillier began planning her wedding, which was her first foray on the bridal market, and thought it needed updating. She could not find any modern dresses, and did not like the excess of lace. She used her fashion degree to create dresses for her relatives and bridal party. After the wedding, there were business cards left for her. It was then when she realized she could make a business out of her beautiful bridal designs. Her husband Tom joined the company as CEO. She opened her first retail store in 2001. In 2004 she drew wide notice for her wedding dresses for Britney Spears and Emmy Awards dresses for Jamie-Lynn DiScala and Allison Janney, among others. She opened a Los Angeles "flagship" store on Melrose Place in 2007, and added a New York store in 2012. Her collections now include ready-to-wear, evening gowns, bridal, bridesmaids, linens, tableware, fine paper, and home fragrances. In 2016, in collaboration with Pottery Barn Kids, Lhuillier launched a line for babies and kids. The collection featured over 120 items of home furnishings for the nursery, bedroom, and playroom.

Lhuillier has become especially known for her celebrity wedding and red carpet gowns. Her list of clientele includes Blake Lively, D

Sidelights

Monique Lhuillier's understated but luxurious bridal designs have earned her a devoted clientele since she launched her business in 1996. Her second line of eveningwear has also garnered accolades and an impressive roster of clients, including Angelina Jolie, Jessica Simpson, and Tyra Banks, but Lhuillier's best-known celebrity commission may be the dress she designed for pop star Britney Spears for her 2004 wedding to Kevin Federline. "On special occasions women should shine from within," Lhuillier explained to InStyle writer Hal Rubenstein about her design ethos. "Their glamour should be clean. No overaccessorizing, no overstyling. It's always dangerous to go out there in something that is not you. People should notice your personality first, not your dress."

Born in the early 1970s, Lhuillier (pronounced LOO-lee-ay) grew up on Cebu, one of the islands of the Philippines archipelago, in a home with two brothers and a sister. Their father was of French heritage, but had been born in Vietnam when that southeast Asian country was still a French colony, and had a varied career as a diplomat, jeweler, and real estate investor. Lhuillier's mother was from the Philippines and had once worked as a model. The Lhuilliers' cosmopolitan household was

    Monique Lhuillier’s Career and Background

    Designing For Her Own Wedding

Monique Lhuillier’s rise to popularity is almost too good to be true. After meeting her future husband Tom Bugbee while she was at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, Lhuillier quit her job and put all her energy on planning the wedding.

This decision would prove to be the catalyst for her successful career designing wedding dresses. While shopping for her dress, Lhuillier was disappointed in the selection. As she explained to InStyle‘s Rubenstein, the “sleeves were too big and bodices too junked up with beads.”  The excessive lace in most designs made her feel very unattractive. Finally, she was able to find the perfect wedding dress, but she put her skills to use by designing 25 dresses for members of her bridal party and her family.

Lhuillier and Bugbee’s wedding reception was in 1995 at the Ritz-Carltonin Marina del Rey, California. By the end of the reception, Lhuillier had business cards waiting for her at the hotel’s front desk. “They were left by people asking if I could design for their weddings. That’s when I knew I could make a business out of this,” Lhuillier told People‘s.

One year later, Lhuillier was able to launch her company. She called a few people to find out when the next trade show for bridal-wear industry would be, and she made six different bridal gowns and many bridesmaid dresses in about a month , and displayed them at the booth she rented. By the end of the event, she had signed with five bridal stores. A couple years later, her husband soon quit his job and worked full time on the new business. After a few years, they started a side evening-wear line and finally in 2001, Lhuillier opened her first retail space in Beverly Hills.
