Priscilla Chan is a philanthropist, a physician, and the wife of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. In 2015, the couple founded the philanthropic limited liability company Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative; its charitable arm, the Chan Zuckerberg Foundation; and its political arm, Chan Zuckerberg Advocacy.

Chan was born in Braintree, Massachusetts, to a low-income immigrant family of Chinese and Vietnamese descent. She graduated valedictorian from Quincy High School. She met Zuckerberg while the two attended Harvard University and she studied biology. Chan worked as an elementary school teacher after college and later graduated from the University of California, San Francisco with a medical degree. She currently works as a pediatrician.

Chan Zuckerberg Initiative

The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative was announced on Facebook on December 1, 2015, upon the birth of Chan and Zuckerberg’s first child. Over the course of their lifetimes, Zuckerberg and Chan have pledged to donate 99% of their Facebook stock, with an estimated value of $45 billion in 2015, and as of December 2020 an estimated value close to $100 billion.

As an LLC, the Initiative’s tax implications differ from standard nonprofits. Stock given to the Initiative will not result in tax credits and will remain under Zuckerberg and Chan’s control through their ownership of the Initiative. However, when they liquidate or contribute these shares for direct grants, they will be eligible for tax benefits. Additionally, by transferring their wealth in company shares to the Initiative, Zuckerberg and Chan can avoid paying estate taxes on their wealth in the future upon their deaths. On the other hand, the LLC will be liable for income or capital gains taxes on any successful investments into for-profit companies.

When Priscilla Chan married her long-time boyfriend, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, last weekend she looked every inch the fairytale bride.

In a stunning full-length white gown, 27-year-old Priscilla smiled serenely as she exchanged vows with Zuckerberg, 28, worth an astonishing £12 billion, in a surprise ceremony.

Her transformation into the wife of the world's youngest billionaire, however, is more remarkable than it may seem.

For Priscilla is the child of a Chinese-Vietnamese father who arrived in America with his family in the Seventies after spending time in a refugee camp.

Later Dennis Chan, 47, raised enough money to open a Chinese restaurant, where he worked gruelling 18-hour days as he dreamt of his first-born daughter living the American dream.

Priscilla was raised largely by her grandmother as her mother Yvonne also worked long hours at the Taste of Asia in Boston. At the 1,200-pupil state-run Quincy High School in the working-class town of Quincy, near Boston, it quickly became clear that Priscilla was bright - and determined to get on.

Peter Swanson, 66, her science teacher and tennis coach, said: 'She came up to me during that first year, when she was 13, and said, 'What do I have to do to get into Harvard University?''

Priscilla Chan (born February 24, 1985) is an American pediatrician and philanthropist. She and her husband, Mark Zuckerberg, a co-founder and CEO of Meta Platforms, established the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative in December 2015 with a pledge to transfer 99 percent of their Facebook shares, then valued at $45 billion. She attended Harvard University and received her medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco.

Early life and education

Chan was born in Braintree, Massachusetts, and grew up in Quincy, Massachusetts. Her parents were Chinese refugees who fled Vietnam in boats. Chan grew up speaking Cantonese and interpreted for her grandparents who raised her and her two younger sisters, Michelle and Elaine, while her parents worked. Chan's father owned a restaurant in Massachusetts, which he later sold to run a wholesale fish company in 2006. Chan graduated valedictorian of her class from Quincy High School, where she was involved with the FIRST Robotics Competition team #69 HYPER and where she was the captain of the tennis team. Her classmates voted her "Class Genius."

Although her parents were supportive of college education, they were unfamiliar with the process, including the SAT exam. Chan is the first college graduate in her family and has said that "education is an incredibly personal issue" for her, noting that "[i]f you're the first generation to go to college...sometimes you don't realize your potential until others point it out." Chan was born on February 24, 1985, to Chinese refugee parents who fled to the US from Vietnam before she was born. She was born in Baintree, Massachusetts.

Chan said that growing up, her mom worked two jobs, while she would interpret for her grandparents who couldn't speak any English. Chan said she was once voted "class genius" at high school.   

Chan attended Quincy High School in Massachusetts. where she graduated in 2003 as class valedictorian and was in the robotics club. Chan was accepted into Harvard after graduating from Quincy, majoring in biology.

Chan met Zuckerberg at Harvard in 2003. The pair struck up a conversation during a party at Zuckerberg's Jewish fraternity Alpha Epsilon Pi, while they waited to use the restroom.  

Chan was among the first people to join Facebook, on Feb. 5, 2004.

After graduating from Harvard in 2007, she went on to study medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, specializing in pediatrics, and graduated five years later. 

In September 2010, Chan moved in with Zuckerberg. He announced the news on Facebook.
