Sean Avery Concerned About Elisha Cuthbert Pass-Around Trend Plaguing NHL

· The NHL certainly has had its share of enfants terribles in its day, but none quite as inscrutably fascinating as Vogue sample-closet re-organizer Sean Avery. He made some comments up in Calgary this morning regarding hockey hag ex-girlfriend Elisha Cuthbert's newest Flame (that would be defenseman Dion Phaneuf) that got him banned from the league indefinitely. Hilarious.

Hold your breath, it's time for another one of those moments when the NHL turns into a small suburban high school.

Sean Avery, in Calgary with the Dallas Stars to play the Flames and never one to shun the spotlight, actually summoned a camera crew from Canada's TSN to deliver the following statement as reported by the Calgary Herald:

"Uh, I'm really happy to be back in Calgary. I love Canada.

"And I just want to comment on how it's become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don't know what that's about.

    "Enjoy the game tonight."

The jab, of course, is directed at Calgary Flames defenceman Dion Phaneuf, who is dating Avery's ex-girlfriend, Elisha Cuthbert. The actress, reportedly, also dated Mike Komisarek of the Montreal Canadiens.

The second clip - in its entirety; he refused to answer answer questions - got a rise out of some of his younger teammates. "He said what?" shrieked one. Many of them cackled, in fact.

You'll recall that earlier this season that Stars center Mike Modano expressed his displeasure with Avery and partner-in-crime Steve Ott. Today it was Stars goalie Marty Turco's turn to play the role of savvy and sage veteran: "Well, hopefully, he doesn't back down . . . and he shows up like a man But we expect that out of him, like we have all year. The show continues."

Indeed it does. Tonight in the U.S., Versus elected to air Philadelphia vs. Tampa Bay. I bet they're regretting that decision about now.

NHL Star Apologizes For Calling Elisha Cuthbert ‘Sloppy Seconds’

NHL hockey star Sean Avery has apologized for comments he made this week, calling his ex-girlfriend, actress Elisha Cuthbert, “sloppy seconds.”

“I would like to sincerely apologize for my off-color remarks to the press yesterday from Calgary,” Avery said, according to the Sporting News. “I should not have made those comments and I recognize that they were inappropriate. It was a bad attempt to build excitement for the game, but I am now acutely aware of how hurtful my actions were. I caused unnecessary embarrassment to my peers as well as people I have been close with in the past.”

On Wednesday, Avery, who plays for the NHL’s Dallas Stars, took a jab at some of his colleagues who he claimed had been dating his former flames.

“It’s a common thing for NHL guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds,” Avery panned for the cameras.

Although he didn’t mention her by name, Avery had been dating former “24” star Cuthbert, who is now dating fellow hockey player Dion Phaneuf from the Calgary Flames, and has also been linked to another player from the Montreal Canadiens.

Avery, who has made a reputation as the NHL’s bad boy and garnered headlines when he interned for Vogue editor Anna Wintour last summer, also previously dated former supermodel Rachel Hunter.

Hunter is currently dating Los Angeles Kings player Jaret Stoll.

“I apologize for offending the great fans of the NHL, the commissioner, my teammates, my coaching staff and the Dallas Stars management and ownership,” Avery continued in his apology. “As many of you know, I like to mix it up on and off the ice from time to time, but understand that this time I took it too far.”

As a result of his initial comments, the NHL’s commissioner suspended Avery indefinitely for what was deemed “inappropriate public comments, not pertaining to the game.”

Cuthbert's ex sorry for sexual slur

Elisha Cuthbert's ex Sean Avery has apologised for a sexual slur he made about the 24 star to her new boyfriend.

The ice hockey player's offensive remarks to Calgary Flames's Dion Phaneuf in a pre-game interview resulted in an indefinite NHL suspension.

Avery, who plays for the Dallas Stars, reportedly said: "I just want to comment on how it's become, like, a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don't know what that's about."

He has now apologised for the outburst, telling People in a statement: "I caused unnecessary embarrassment to my peers as well as people I have been close with in the past.

"As many of you know, I like to mix it up on and off the ice from time to time, but understand that this time I took it too far.

"I should not have made those comments and I recognise that they were inappropriate. It was a bad attempt to build excitement for the game, but I am now acutely aware of how hurtful my actions were."
