Alysia hails from Los Angeles. Born of parents who met at an acting class, it was no wonder that she would have the gift. Some of those gifts are acting, singing, writing (poetry and screenwriter), stand up comedy, directing, and producing. She's had a career in Film and TV including credits like: Desperate House Wives, a recurring role on Everybody Hates Chris, Scrubs, NYPD Blue, and The Shield, just to name a few. Four years ago, she got a deep passion for all things more true and cultural. That's what brought her to NY and she has been on her grind ever since. She, now, reigns as the Two Time Manhattan Monologue Slam Champion. Alysia was in the amazing stage production of "Who Is A Virtuous Woman", directed by the fabulous Wendy McKenzie and is in the 20th Century Fox Film, The Sitter with Jonah Hill which is due to premiere in August '11, working on a One Woman Show. Alysia, Just finished shooting "Excuse Me For Living" with the talented Tom Pelphrey from Guiding Light, Dick Cavett, Robert Vaughn, and Chistopher Lloyd, and is work- shopping at The Gotham Comedy Club with her stand-up skills.

Biography and career[]
Alysia Powell was born in Los Angeles, California. Her parents met during an acting class, so she was exposed to the medium from an early age. However, it wasn't until her 20's that Powell started in the entertainment career as a gospel singer. Eventually, she moved into acting.
Through her career, Powell has appeared in TV shows like NYPD Blue, Desperate Housewives, Everybody Hates Chris, and Billions. She has also had regular and recurring roles on shows like The Mysteries of Laura, The Department of Ed, and Orange Is the New Black. Powell has also appeared in feature films like Stitches, Cain and Abel, and Havoc.

As Mrs. Winters, the mother of Black Panther party member Jake Winters, in the Oscar-nominated film, “Judas and The Black Messiah”, Alysia Joy Powell is earning critical acclaim. But after two decades of notable film and TV roles on Bull, Billions, Everybody Hates Chris, Ma’ Rainey’s Black Bottom, Pose, and Mysteries of Laura, to mention only a handful, surely you’ve seen her work and been impressed. Though she has successfully made her way through Hollywood on her own outstanding talent, she credits the animals in her life for walking her through her journey.
Alysia Joy Powell feels animal energies, in fact, one could dub this acclaimed actress, writer/director “the animal whisperer.” When her cat Garth crossed the rainbow bridge as we say when animals pass away, she felt his energy for months after.
FOR THE LOVE OF ANIMALS
Growing up, Powell love for animals was always present. And her skill for communicating with them she reveals, helped them lead long, healthy lives, “I never over analyze my communication with animals but they understand me and I understand them.” Her first dog named, Tomeko was a Japanese Akita who was with her for nineteen years, a phenomenally long time for a dog. Her Siamese cat Garth, a gift from her mother, lived for twenty two years.
It has been four years since Powell’s beloved Garth passed away but her relationship with him was like no other Powell recalls, “When Garth was in my life and would meet new people, I could tell someone’s energy by the way he responded to them. If a person did not have good energy, he would go straight to the bedroom and not come out. On some occasions he would sit on people’s laps and I knew they were good. It was interesting to watch.” Sadly, cancer ended Garth’s life, Powell recalls, “On the way to the vet I was crying the whole way there. A couple of weeks ago there was this guest on The Wendy Williams Show who caught my attention. She was vibrant and outspoken and had a sass that was undeniable. I liked her TV presence right away. Then when she gave one of my fave plus-size retailers, Ashley Stewart, a shout-out, that sparked my attention even more.
