    Kang Ji-young (Korean: 강지영; born January 18, 1994), also known mononymously as Jiyoung or under the stage name JY in Japan, is a South Korean singer, songwriter and actress. At age 14, she rose to fame as a member of the South Korean girl group Kara, joining the group in 2008. Dubbed as "Hallyu Queens", Kara achieved mainstream success across Asia, particularly in Japan where they earned ten top-five singles on the Oricon Singles Chart, and became the first female South Korean act to perform at the Tokyo Dome. Kang left Kara in April 2014, but rejoined for the group's 15th anniversary commemorative album Move Again (2022), and subsequent concert tour (2024).

    After leaving Kara, Kang moved to Japan and shifted focus onto her acting career. She achieved recognition for her portrayal of characters in many live-action adaptations of popular manga series, including Yukime in the Nippon TV series Hell Teacher: Jigoku Sensei Nube (2014), Irina Jelavić in the Assassination Classroom films (2015–2016), and Itori in the film Tokyo Ghoul S (2019). She is also known for her lead role in the science-fiction thriller series Orphan Black – 7 Genes (2017–2018). Aside from her Japanese-speaking roles, Kang has appeared in Korean dramas with a lead role in the JTBC series Sweet Munchies (2020), and special appearances in Let Me Be Your Knight (2022) and Doctor Cha (2023).

    Kang signed with Sony Music Japan as a solo artist in 2015. She released her debut studio album, Many Faces (2017), which spawned two top-ten singles in Japan, "Saigo no Sayonara" and "Suki na Hito ga Iru Koto". The latter was double certified by the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ).     Kim Ji-young (Korean: 김지영; born September 13, 1980), professionally known by the stage nameHan Chae-young, is a South Korean actress. She first gained recognition as the antagonist in the television series Autumn in My Heart (2000) before gaining wider prominence as the titular character in Sassy Girl Chun-hyang (2005). Her other roles include Only You (2005), Fireworks (2006), Boys Over Flowers (2009), A Man Called God (2010), and Pretty Man (2013).

    Early life

    Han Chae-young was born as Kim Ji-young in Daegu, South Korea, but her family soon immigrated to the United States and she spent her childhood years in a Chicago suburb, where she attended Glenbrook South High School. During one of her visits to Korea, she was reportedly discovered by a famed Korean comedian who suggested that she put her college plans on hold and try acting.

    Career

    2000–2004: Early career

    Taking on the stage name Han Chae-young, she made her acting debut in 2000 with the horror film The Record. Her role as the antagonist in the popular television melodrama Autumn in My Heart gave her more exposure, though she was criticized for her awkward acting skills.

    She later gained the nickname "Barbie Doll of Korea," a reference to her tall, shapely proportions. Though this image would land her numerous commercial endorsements, her acting projects in the next few years saw Han typecast as an unapproachable beauty from a wealthy background.

    2005–2008: Breakthrough

    EXCLUSIVE: Jee Young Han, who recurred as Esti Nelson in Season 1 of UnPrisoned, has been promoted to series regular for the upcoming second season of the Onyx Collective dramedy, starring and executive produced by Kerry Washington and Delroy Lindo.

    Han’s Esti is Paige’s (Washington) foster sister, who was adopted at age 4 from a Korean orphanage by Paige’s foster parents. She appeared in six episodes in the first season.
