Land of Lincoln
Adventures in Abes America
byAndrew FergusonAbraham Lincoln was our greatest president and perhaps the most influential American who ever lived. But what is his place in our country today? In this brilliant and captivating new book, Andrew Ferguson goes searching for Lincoln in homes, museums, national parks, roadside motels, and elsewhere from Rhode Island to Beverly Hills. What he finds is a man whose spirit, mythology, and philosophy continue to shape our national identity in ways both serious and surprising.
Ferguson knows a thing or two about the Lincoln mystique. As a child growing up in Illinois, he hung photos of Abe from his bedroom wall, memorized the Gettysburg Address, and read himself to sleep at night with the Second Inaugural. But, decades later, just when Ferguson had almost lost track of Lincoln completely, his buffdom was reignited.
In Land of Lincoln, Ferguson packs his bags and embarks on a journey to the heart of contemporary Lincoln Nation, where he encounters a world as funny as it is poignant, and a population as devoted as it is colorful. In a small town in Indiana, Ferguson drops in on the national conference of Lincoln presenters, grown men who make their living (sort of) by impersonating their hero. He crisscrosses the country to meet the premier Lincoln memorabilia collectors, whose prized items include Lincolns chamber pot, locks of his hair, and pages from a boyhood schoolbook. In a motel outside Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, he attends a leadership conference that teaches businesspeople how to run their companies more effectively by appropriating Lincolns management style. And in one of the books most amusing sections, Ferguson takes his wife and children on a trip across the long-defunct Lincoln Heritage Trail, a driving tour of landmarks from Lincolns life that wound through three states in the s. At one point, Ferguson e An educational video series focused on amplifying important Black figures and events throughout history, who have often been overlooked in textbooks, and in schools. Viola Desmond played a seminal role in Canada’s civil rights movement. On Nov. 8, , Demond was dragged out of the Roseland Movie Theatre in New Glasgow, N.S. and jailed by police for sitting in the “whites only” section. At the time, Black people could only sit in the balcony. She was subsequently convicted of a “tax violation” for “failing” to pay the 1 cent difference between the whites only section, and the balcony seating. An eight-time Grammy-winning Jazz pianist and composer, Oscar Peterson is widely considered to be one of the greatest Jazz pianists of all time. Peterson was born in Montreal, Québec, after his parents immigrated to Canada from the West Indies. He grew up in the predominantly Black neighbourhood “Little Burgundy”, and it was there he encountered the jazz culture that would inspire him to become one of the world’s best pianists. Peterson travelled the globe, playing with world-renowned artists, and was a trailblazer for young Canadians - particularly Black Canadians - who wanted to pursue music. He was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in , received the Order of Canada in , and many schools and establishments now adorn his name with pride. Viola Desmond
In , Desmond was granted Canada’s first posthumous pardon, a formal apology from the Crown-in-Right-of-Nova Scotia for prosecuting her for tax evasion and an acknowledgement that she was rightfully resisting racial discrimination.
Her face is now the centrepiece of our $10 banknote, accompanied by quotations from the Human Rights Bill.
